DESCRIPTION

Allah says يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ O faithful! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for your predecessors, that you may protect yourselves (al-Baqarah 2:183). Fasting is one of five pillars upon which this faith of ours is established. It is the institutionalization of abstinence; the vow of Mary who allayed her fears with dates and water; it is the sustenance of the souls. But feasting after fasting breaks the spiritual ritual of hunger and thirst and leaves the soul starving for meaning.

Ramadan is nigh upon us, and these are the Days of Allah that return to us by His grace year after year, that we may renew our covenant with our Lord and through His Prophet ﷺ. Lanturna invites you to join us this year for a weekend study of Imām al-Ghazzālī’s Book on Gluttony, coupled with a month-long program covering the themes of Ramadan: compassion, forgiveness, and release.

EL-HAJJ HISHAM MAHMOUD · LEAD INSTRUCTOR

El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud has studied theology, hadith, legal theory, jurisprudence, ethics, Qur’an recitation, and Arabic with scholars in Morocco, Mauritania, and Egypt. He has taught for more than a decade at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, then left the Academy to institute Lanturna, an educational initiative that intends to establish learning collectives throughout North America. He continues to read with scholars and students in the United States. Currently, Hajj Hisham resides in Pennsylvania with his wife and four children.

DR. LAMISE ELKHALIL, BSC, ND, · HONORED GUEST

Dr. Lamise Elkhalil BSc, ND is a board certified naturopathic physician. She attained her Bachelor of Science from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the leading naturopathic medical college in Ontario, The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. She has a clinical focus on the treatment and management of women’s health disorders and chronic pain including Fibromyalgia.

Dr. Lamise has been in clinical practice for 18 years. She is also a certified Prolotherapist and Acupuncturist. She received her training in prolotherapy at the University of Wisconsin with the Hemwell-Hackett Foundation and the American Osteopathic Association of Prolotherapy Integrative Pain Management. Dr. Lamise has received additional certifications in clinical nutrition, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, IV vitamin therapy, neural therapy, classical homeopathy, and botanical medicine.

ḤAKĪM MAZEN ATASSI · HONORED GUEST

Dr. Mazen Atassi is a Naturopathic Doctor and the Founding Director of Forward To Health, a wellness clinic and educational initiative based in Chicago, whose aim is to revive, practice, and teach the holistic and vitalistic tradition of Ḥikmah Medicine.

Dr. Mazen graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Biology and from National University of Health Sciences with a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine. He practices and teaches Ḥikmah Medicine with a focus in homeopathy and somatic trauma therapy. He has studied with world-renowned healer Ḥakīm Archuletta and is licensed under him to practice.

Dr. Mazen has also spent the last decade studying the traditional Islamic disciplines with scholars in the United States and abroad. He has since joined the Cambridge Muslim College in the United Kingdom as Instructor in their Diploma of Islamic Psychology Program, which launched in 2021, and has since established a new standard in Islamic Psychology education, training, and practice. He currently resides in Chicago with his wife and three children.

ROOHE AHMED, MPH, RD · HONORED GUEST

Ms. Roohe Ahmed is a registered dietitian with over 15 years experience working for a healthcare organization as well as a nutrition instructor at the college level. She holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Masters degree in Public Health, specializing in Nutrition from Loma Linda University. Ms. Ahmed specializes in weight management for adults and children and chronic diseases linked to nutrition, and is also a certified personal fitness trainer. She is active in the Muslim community, serving on various boards and committees, and has been leading a women’s study circle for more than ten years. Ms. Ahmed is passionate about all aspects of wellness and just as passionate about a good cup of tea!
