MEET YOUR INSTRUCTORS…

El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud

El-Hajj Hisham Mahmoud has studied theology, hadith, legal theory, jurisprudence, ethics, Qur'an recitation, and Arabic with scholars in Morocco, Mauritania, and Egypt. He has taught for more than a decade at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, then left the Academy to institute Lanturna, an educational initiative that intends to establish learning collectives throughout North America. He continues to read with scholars and students in the United States. Currently, Hajj Hisham resides in Pennsylvania with his wife and three children, and he hopes to be like any one of them when he grows up.

Ustādhah Anjum Mir

For over 20 years, Anjum Mir has been supporting parents in establishing healthy home rhythms in which children can grow in body, intellect, and faith. Her teaching experience has taken her from public school to Islamic school and finally to Waldorf Education, which she discovered while looking for an educational system that honored the development and spiritual well-being of her first child.

Currently, Anjum, a mother of four, teaches parent-child classes at a Waldorf school, offers prenatal, infant and toddler focused workshops and seminars, private consultation for families needing support in establishing healthy rhythms in their home, and offers parenting classes for parents of children through middle school. She is on the board of several education-focused organizations and is involved in teacher education and training.

Anjum obtained a degree in Literary Journalism and Anthropology from Boston University and another degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin. A published writer, she has worked as an associate editor of a small national magazine, freelanced for a number of journals, and authored a non-fiction book. She is currently working on a parenting blog.

Shaykh Adeyinka Mendes

Adeyinka Muhammad Mendes is a native Ohioan of Yoruba, Brazilian, and African-American ancestry who also spent some of his formative years in Nigeria and Houston, Texas. He has a background of working with interfaith, Muslim, academic, permacultural, and peace-building institutions. Adeyinka's studies and work have taken him to countries around the world including Syria, Mauritania, Morocco, Singapore, Turkey, Senegal, Malaysia, and back to Nigeria. He is fluent in Arabic, received a degree in Arabic Language and Cultural Studies from the Ohio State University, and has been trained for over two decades in the spiritual, scholastic, and aesthetic traditions of Muslim civilization by teachers from around the world. Adeyinka is particularly passionate about uplifting youth, empowering women, and inspiring African-Americans with knowledge of their spiritual and intellectual legacy in order to build that more compassionate and sacred world for which our hearts yearn. He currently resides in New Jersey with his wife and children.

In preparation for our retreat, all three of our teachers held a preliminary session that was open to the public on Tue, Feb 9, at 7 pm, which has since been uploaded to YouTube and accessible via THIS LINK.

And toward the eve of his passing, he instructed those present to inform those absent.
